Benjamin Hughes
Benjamin Hughes, an American national, serves as an independent arbitrator, Adjunct Professor at the National University of Singapore Faculty of Law and Court Member of the Singapore International Arbitration Centre (SIAC). He holds Fellow in the CIArb, Hong Kong Institute of Arbitrators, and Singapore Institute of Arbitrators. Prior to establishing his independent arbitration practice in 2013, he practiced international arbitration at Shearman & Sterling's U.S. and Singapore offices, and co-founded the International Dispute Resolution Group at Shin & Kim LLC – one of South Korea's largest full-service law firms.
With extensive experience in international commercial arbitration, he has settled over 150 international arbitration cases spanning diverse commercial disputes, resolving controversies involving claims aggregating billions of US dollars.
An accomplished educator in dispute resolution and comparative law, Ben previously served as Associate Professor at Seoul National University School of Law and held visiting professorships at the University of Hong Kong Faculty of Law and National Taiwan University College of Law. He contributes to scholarly discourse as editorial board member of the Asian Journal of International Arbitration, Korean Arbitration Review, and Journal of Korean Law. His academic background includes training in both civil law and common law systems, supplemented by studies in East Asian history and Chinese studies (Mandarin) at Harvard University.
